EDUCATION

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a 5-year academic, employment and savings incentive program designed to help low income families gain education and career skills to move toward self-sufficiency.  Through case management, the program provides life-skills guidance and linkages to network service providers. 303-441-3923   www.fssbouldercounty.org

Property Tax Exemption for Seniors. Although the State Constitution says “real Property,” those over 65 who have lived in and owned their mobile home for 10 years qualify for the Senior Homestead Exemption. 50% property tax savings for certain seniors. SENIORS & PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Boulder County CareConnect is an over 40 year-old nonprofit that provides volunteer-powered safety net services for seniors and adults with disabilities to help them stay safe and live more independently.  Free or donation.  Volunteers will come to your home to help you with specific chores such as yard maintenance, take you to medical appointments and pharmacies; take orders, shop for, and deliver groceries to the homebound or those who can’t shop for themselves; and volunteers to perform minor home repairs including grab installation, wheel chair and walker repair, fire alarm installation, and more to help seniors stay safe in their home.  There is also volunteer opportunities through RSVP, a national organization for folks ages 55 and up to provide services to others based on your expertise, skills, passions.  6325 Gunpark Drive, #F, Boulder, 80301, 303-443-1933.  http://www.careconnectbc.org/   Email: info@careconnectbc.org  

The mission of Boulder Senior Services, part of the Department of Human Services, is to foster the engagement and well-being of older adults and promote a positive image of aging through community collaboration and excellent services. Lots of links and information, including bilingual case management and referrals to community services; individualized consultation with a focus on low-income seniors, basic-needs financial applications assistance, caregiver support, respite assistance and education; services are available to those age 60 and up and their families. Offers fitness programs, preventive health screenings, seminars, and classes through community partnerships; ongoing educational classes and seminars in technology, life skills, and aging issues.  Also creative pursuits, games, and daytrips for those age 55 and up.  If you are looking for local resources for older adults or family caregivers, contact a Resource Specialist by calling 303-441-4388 or by sending an email to aging@bouldercolorado.gov . TRANSPORTATION

Inexpensive transportation in Boulder County is rather limited at this time.  Public transit and bicycling are probably the best available alternatives to cars at this time.  It may be useful to explore carpooling with friends or developing cooperative transportation groups.  Maybe someone could help organize a Vista Village carsharing group, for example to cultural or sports events or weekly grocery shopping or?!

RTD (Regional Transportation District).  Public transportation services on fixed routes. Call 303-299-6000 for routes, schedules, and fares.  Discounted fares available for day, monthly, and annual passes and special program passes (such as ecopass).  Really cheap and easy to go from Boulder to DIA, especially for the senior fare.  http://www.rtd-denver.com/

 Office of Veteran Services, University of Colorado Boulder campus.  The organization assists veterans in making successful transitions from military to college life by creating a social and professional support network, educating veterans on the benefits they are entitled, and providing a welcoming atmosphere to the University of Colorado.
